Nia is a digital pay-as-you-go wallet enabling health insurance affordability among Tanzanians in informal sectors.
Tanzania’s health insurance coverage remains low, at about 34 percent. As a result, the majority of the population, especially those in informal sectors, rely on the direct cash payment (out of pocket payment) system when they want to access health services, which in most cases impose huge financial risks and exacerbate poverty. NIA is built to bridge this gap.
In 2018, We conducted a survey accessing factors that limit health insurance affordability among 150+ Small to Medium sized entrepreneurs (Informal sector) and the leading factor among this group was the all-at-once high costs that are associated with
majority health insurance schemes. In 2020, we mobilized a small group of Tanzanians in informal sectors to explore effective ways to bridge this gap, and that is how our solution NIA came about.
